Describe the history of the organization and its current programs and services.

Response: Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents more than 133,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, and is America's oldest national engineering society. ASCE's vision is to position engineers as global leaders building a better quality of life.  The Society comprises a national board of direction; over 600 local affiliates, which include 87 Sections, 158 Branches and 130 Younger Member Groups; 267 Student Chapters; and 11 International Student Groups.  The Mohawk-Hudson Section of The American Society of Civil Engineers was established in 1938. In 1976 the Mid-Hudson Branch was established to better serve ASCE members and their communities within twenty three New York State Counties.

How will your project use existing community resources (local expertise, leadership, and traditions) to strengthen the community’s ability to meet future challenges?

Response: The Society goal is to bring groups together on projects that continue to keep giving back.  Although this project appears to benefit one individual, the Society believes it will benefit the community as a whole.  The Society and its volunteers are fully engaged in making this a better world by design. We, at the Mid-Hudson Branch are using our network and expertise to reach out to the non-solicited cries of an Out-of-State Community and engage support at the Local, State, Regional and National Levels. We are calling to action individuals and organizations and providing direction to achieve a goal that for one Community seems all but lost.  Once this project is complete, the community will be left with a sense of accomplishment and know firsthand that big goals can be accomplished when groups come together.  Our goal is to leave them with a sense of hope for future projects of the same caliber.

How will your project develop and strengthen local leadership?

Response: The Society will utilize our networking capabilities along with a cross-functional team of large corporations, local builders & numerous volunteers to raise the necessary funds and complete the buildout of the project.  Our goal is to provide this opportunity to enable others to volunteer their efforts, whether big or small, monetary or otherwise and learn that rewards can come in many different ways; not only to the volunteer themselves, but to those who are being helped. We hope that each person who is involved with this project will feel a sense of satisfaction and pass this message on to others so that the healthy cycle can continue.

How many people serve on your board?
